PGA Seniors

Last week I competed in probably my major competition of the year, the PGA Seniors Championship 54 hole event. This is open to Club Professionals from across Europe and was played at Foxhills in Surrey which is a former venue for the European Tour school. It has two 18 hole championship courses called the Long Cross and the Hunt. The field of 280 split over the 2 courses with a cut(top 40) after 36 holes and a final 18 holes on the last day. It was also nice to meet up with some of my fellow Pros who I only now see at these events.

The weather was not too kind and the 1st day was postponed due to a flooded course, so I had to play 36 holes on day 2! Not ideal but it had to be done. After a strange start of 4 over par after 6 holes nothing went too wrong, I just failed to chip and putt to save par. I rallied and finished 4 over for the first 18 and backed it up with a 1 over par second round to finish 5 over par making the cut easily (8 over). The leader was standing at 1 under par.

It is so easy to qualify and then throw in a bad last 18 holes so I was determined to post a decent score and not fall back down the field. I managed to shoot a last round 2 over par for a total of 7 over for the tournament and that eventually finished a decent 22nd.The winning score was level par which I think reflected how tough the course was.

What did I take from the week? I had a game plan and stuck with it. I did not try to force a score and I did not try to play Hollywood shots. Just simply hit a fairway, hit a green and 2 putts then walk to the next tee. Did I play well? Not really but I got the ball around and scored ok.

Sometimes damage limitation is good but you must have a positive mind set. Sometimes you have got to scramble and see where that leaves you score wise. Can I play and hit the ball better? Absolutely but not this week, it was not how I wanted to play but I had to go with what I had and sometimes being a street fighter with determination is a great asset.

Outside Makeover

The Golf Shop has had a bit of a makeover on the outside last week. The vinyl's on the windows have been replaced (they were blue) we now have some old photos of Pannal through the ages with a bit of text on. We believe the new look reflects the traditions and values of Pannal Golf Club. Martin and myself have worked closely with member Paul Salem to get the images, we hope you all like the new look.

Hole in One Club

This week's competitions saw 2 hole in ones on Saturday. Will Eardley canned his tee shot on 15 with a 6 iron and on the same day Mark Homer holed out on 17 with a driver.

Congratulations to both of you. Here is a picture of Mark on the 17th.

Rory Decides

With a lot of speculation of which clubs Rory will be playing this season, he has plumped for TaylorMade. This now means that 3 players in the top 4 spots of the world ranking play TaylorMade.

I know they get paid but they will have had a choice of as to which manufacturer to go with. At the end of the day they are only interested in winning tournaments. Rory tried all different clubs and liked how Taylor Made played and felt.

Everyone is different and we would recommend you do the same. Take some 6 irons that we have for demo like TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist and PING to see which one you like the best.

This can be done with drivers, fairways and hybrids too, we have probably the widest selection of demo clubs for you to try in the area. When you have made your decision then we would recommend that we look at you in the Golf Studio to look at some numbers to see if we can make them even better.
